🩴 Typical stuff for this time of year

As much as I enjoyed those few days with highs around 80 and no mugginess, I really can’t complain about this weather too much. Yes, it’s warm, but it’s in the range of what we often see in the second week of August.

That, and the humidity won’t get out of hand.

Dew points rise over the coming days, but should stay out of the tropical range. We miiiiiight get there sometime next week, but it’d be pretty much the edge of that threshold.

🌵 Dry run keeps running

Yesterday was Columbus’ sixth straight day with no measurable rain, the longest streak of the summer (and then some). The longest stretch had been five days, from June 20–24.

You have to go back to mid-April to match this; we had no measurable rain in the 10-day stretch of April 11–20. Three of those days had a trace, though… so if you go by pure goose eggs, this is the longest since a six-day run of zeroes from March 9–14.

This year has not had a seven-day streak of zero precipitation… yet. Barring a surprise, today will get us there.

Rain chances will be minimal for a while. They blip upward a bit Monday, but Tuesday currently holds the most promise.

🌕 Full moon this weekend

Skies cooperate this weekend to see the bright full moon. August’s full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon, named for the big ol’ lake fish. In fact, it’s the oldest and largest native fish species in the Great Lakes.

Some Native American tribes also referred to this as the Dry Moon, Hot Moon, or Blackberry Moon.

That makes two Blackberries that fell out of use. (Cheon Fong Liew, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons)

The moon reaches its fullest illumination at 3:55 a.m. Sunday morning, but it’ll appear full to our eyes each night this weekend.

While you’re looking, try to pick out the craters and lunar “seas” highlighted in this story from Space.com. (Jump partway down to “The Full Sturgeon Moon” section.)
