Forecast highlights

💧 First “real” rain in three weeks

It’d been entirely too long since we’ve had a decent rain in central Ohio.

Generated chart

(Iowa Environmental Mesonet)

Before this morning, we’d officially logged just a hundredth of an inch of rain since the 0.28” that fell on Friday, August 15. That’s nearly three weeks ago.

Today’s off-and-on showers should wrap up by early afternoon, which may come with a final hurrah in the form of a rumble of thunder. Sunshine eventually returns, giving us a nice end to the cool day.

Another disturbance swings through tomorrow evening into Saturday, producing another opportunity for rain. The location of this one’s a little tricky, as it’ll come behind a second cold front. The I-71 corridor is currently the rough dividing line between the have-nots to the northwest and haves to the southeast.

(NOAA Global Systems Laboratory DESI)

Regardless, I think if we have showers on Saturday, they should be light enough to not greatly impede on things happening outside. The best chance is in the morning (keep that in mind for farmers markets).

I imagine this will be clearer in tomorrow’s newsletter.

🍃 Breezy Friday ushers in more fall air

Ahead of that second cold front tomorrow, breezes will pick up from the southwest. Gusts of 20–30 mph are likely through the afternoon before dropping off during the evening.

Highs jump back to around 80 tomorrow on the heels of those southwest winds. However, we’ll fall right back into fall for the weekend with highs in the lower 70s.

📊 Today’s almanac

Normal low/high: 61 / 82
Record low/high: 44 (1997) / 96 (1953)
Sunrise/set: 7:02 a.m. / 7:58 p.m.

🚗 The 70-degree road trip

The pleasant weather we’ve had recently, and have coming up, reminded me of an article I wrote when I worked for Spectrum News.

It’s about a map created by climatologist Brian Brettschneider, who plotted a driving route that keeps you near an average high of 70 degrees throughout a hypothetical year-long road trip.

Read the story here.

(I’m so kind to promote their website, despite them laying off our team last year. 😉)
