The 614cast
Today’s tl;dr
⛅ Sunnier in the morning and cloudier in the afternoon, high in the mid-50s.
Forecast highlights
👌 Seasonable final week of October
It’s really something how quickly we went from being mild/warm to… not. Like, we were near or warmer than 70 for most of the month, and now pushing 60 will be a challenge! Getting to 70 won’t happen again anytime soon, but it’s hardly impossible… more on that in Monday’s newsletter.
Back to the short-term. We have another threat of frost/freeze tonight into tomorrow morning. Here are the forecast lows.
It’s a similar situation to this morning: Outlying areas will be coldest with the best chance of slipping past 32, while the immediate urban area will be warmer in the mid-30s. If you have sensitive plants, you’ll need to protect them again by bringing them inside or covering them with a light cloth sheet.
After this, any noteworthy risk of frosty weather should end for several days.
You can see there’s not much day-to-day variation in temperatures over the next week-ish. And forecast model guidance for temperatures has dropped a little cooler for early next week, possibly keeping us in the upper 50s. It’ll depend in part on clouds vs. sunshine, and I think it’s probably wise to play the low end for the time being.
🛑 Rain waits until next week
Far southern Ohio might get grazed by a brief light shower this weekend, but I don’t expect we’ll see anything here. Even the rain chance next week is iffy.
There ought to be a weather system traversing the region in the early to middle part of next week, but details are still pretty hazy.
📊 Today’s almanac
Normal low/high: 42 / 62
Record low/high: 21 (1981) / 82 (1963)
Sunrise/set: 7:52 a.m. / 6:39 p.m.
🍂 Foliage is finally starting to peak
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued its weekly foliage update yesterday. A decent share of the state is in peak color (red), while the rest is nearing peak (orange).
This weekend’s weather affords a nice opportunity to go out and visit one of the wonderful Metro Parks or state parks. We visited the Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve a few weeks ago, and walking along the Little Miami was pleasant… although that lowest trail is fairly rugged!
