Forecast highlights
🏅 Today won’t win any awards
Unless the award is “miserable fall day.”
As the low pressure from this weather system slides up the Appalachians, it’ll continue wrapping rain across the state throughout the day. Here’s one high-resolution model’s forecast radar:
Guidance generally agrees that things should start to lighten and scatter toward evening, but I’m still planning on some lingering showers while we’re out trick-or-treating. Even if it’s not actively raining (which would be great!!), it’ll still be damp. (Aside: For communities doing trick-or-treating tomorrow, you’ll be in much better shape than those of us doing it tonight.)
In addition to what’s already fallen, we’ll probably get about another half-inch or so, bringing our grand total to the neighborhood of an inch. In fact, the National Weather Service has a 75% chance of getting at least an inch, so it wouldn’t be surprising for some places to top that number.
The rain is only part of the story. Chilly temperatures and blustery winds will complete the ensemble for making it a raw day.
Getting to 50 will probably be a struggle, and at no point will it even feel that warm. Winds from the north to northwest, gusting between 20–30 mph, will keep wind chills in the 40s throughout the day.
👍 Better weather is around the corner
No, it’s not sunshine and rainbows coming, but compared to today’s weather, it sure is an improvement.
Oh, I guess there’ll be some sunshine… but definitely no rainbows.
I think we’ll have some sunshine tomorrow morning, but more clouds develop for the afternoon. Winds will still be a little brisk and gusty, though, until the weekend. It looks like the weekend will also feature intervals and clouds and sun.
Lighter winds and highs in the mid-50s… that’s a fairly respectable start to November.
📊 Today’s almanac
Normal low/high: 40 / 59
Record low/high: 20 (1925) / 80 (1895)
Sunrise/set: 7:59 a.m. / 6:31 p.m.
🌅 A couple of 8 a.m. sunrises
Tired of the dark mornings? They’re almost done, but not before sunrise ticks into the 8 o’clock hour for a couple of days.
Our latest sunrises of the year are Friday and Saturday — 8:00 and 8:01, respectively.
Daylight saving time ends Sunday morning, which means sunrise will roll back to 7:02 a.m. (Sunset will be at 5:28 p.m., though.)
Even in the midst of winter, the latest sunrise is 7:53 a.m. The latest is technically on January 4, although sunrise sits in the 7:53 a.m. timeframe from December 28 to January 11.
As always, this weekend’s semi-annual time change will invite lots of griping… but to be honest, I’m glad we observe both standard and daylight saving time. I’ll explain why in Monday’s newsletter.
