Blustery and mild today, still watching a wet Friday

Since I’m still between jobs (that’s still the euphemism for “unemployed,” isn’t it?), I took advantage of the nice weather and put up our Christmas lights yesterday.

It’s a lot easier to do this when I can actually feel my fingers. Plus the kid didn’t have school today, so she assisted by handing me hooks and knowing to call 911 in case I fell off the ladder. 😏 The rest of the decorations will wait for another day, since those are easier… and I still have up autumn stuff.

The 614cast

Today’s tl;dr

🌤️ Mostly sunny and windy, high in the mid-60s.

Forecast highlights

🪁 Mild breeze today

It’s going to be a windy one today! Winds will be from the southwest to west at 10–20 mph, gusting to around 30–40 mph.

Going into the PM commute, be aware of crosswinds on north-south roads and give trucks some extra space. They’ll be getting hit broadside and might waver over the line during gusts.

☔ Wet Friday

Rainfall amounts have trended downward, closer to a half-inch. However, it’s still going to rain.

Timing continues to favor the bulk coming in the afternoon and early evening.

Winds will also pick up again with this system. However, they’ll be “warm” winds that push highs to around 60 despite the clouds and rain, and even usher in relatively humid air for this time of year.

🥶 First taste of winter

In the wake of the Friday weather system, another disturbance drives through later in the weekend. I’ll drag down the coldest air of the season, by far. Sunday will be the transition day — that high of 50 should happen in the morning and might have to be lowered.

Monday’s high around 40 won’t feel even that warm. Wind chill will be a thing. 😬

And the disorganized system that brings the colder air also has enough moisture around such that, among the chance of light rain, is the potential for light snow.

Yeah, some wet snowflakes are possible late Sunday into early Monday. Don’t bust out the sleds, though, we’re not talking anything like that!

🍃 Warm winds in November

I’m pressed for time with this newsletter and was going to do a summary of October’s weather, but I’m kicking that can to tomorrow. Instead, here’s a rose!

Wait, no, a wind rose.

(Iowa Environmental Mesonet)

This shows the wind direction and speed whenever the temperature is at least 60° in Columbus in November. A wind from the south is the winner, making up 30% of the observations. Southwest winds come in second, making up just over 20% of the observations.

Today’s going to be somewhat unusual. Some of our time in the 60s should come with a wind from the west-southwest or perhaps even west, which make up a pretty small percentage of the observations.

Notice, though, a dearth of winds with any kind of northerly component. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as readings in the 60s in November generally need a little bit of help… and a wind from those directions ain’t it.
